2010 Olympic Torch Book Signing
As you may know, the Winter Olympic Torch Relay was epic for me. Seems like a hundred years ago now, but 106 days across Canada and back in the middle of winter chasing the Olympic flame through some of the most-interesting and varied landscapes in my country has left its mark - some will say scar - on me. The project culminated in the second of three commemorative 2010 Olympic Games books: A Path Of Northern Lights. A while back the owner of the Hudson's Bay department stores invited me to participate in a book signing in stores in Canada and the US. However timing and schedules combined to thwart a tour per se leaving only one date. So..... I'll be signing books at the Lord+Taylor store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan this Thursday, May 6 at 1 pm. The books, by the way, are free if you are in the area and are one of the first 100 to the table. I've been asked many times what my favourite moment or photograph is from the project and it's a little little asking a father to name his favourite child. Here's something that still sticks with me. It's elders and the chief of Bella Bella dressed to the nines on the coast of British Columbia. When the flame arrived and O'Canada was sung many of these men cried like newborns. Our First Nations' people are always the subject of scrutiny and often seen as outsiders not wanting in. Across the country, day in and out I saw something quite different.
