Ice Ice Baby

This is the view out our back door. After a week of cold and snow, a conflicted storm rolled in and doused everything in a thin coat of ice. Beautiful, but deadly for some. Warm, spring-like temperatures are ahead as the green grass and early bloomers begin to poke their heads out.

Happy End Of The Road
Friday, 13 January 2012 17:55

The road trip ended last night on a favourable note with the Canucks beating the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime. The team played four games in six nights and travelled more than 10,000 kilometres. I'm tired. They're tired. And now we are home with a much needed weekend of rest. Overall, my experience was a learning one. Isn't it great that after all these years and with all this experience, I still have so much to learn? First and foremost I was surprised at how quietly 50 + people go about the business of being a travelling NHL hockey team. I was expecting more chaos, more music and a lot more noise. Instead, everyone at this level maintains a focus unheard of in most professions. Imagine the success most of us would enjoy if we had more of this kind of vision? Second, what a pleasure to be around a group of such nice people. So rare. General manager Mike Gilles has built a team of people top to bottom with the goal of proving that nice guys do finish first. Halfway through the season, with the Canucks again leading the league, he has a lot of people following his lead. For me as a documentary photographer I did my usual best invisible impression, but have a lot of work to do in capturing more compelling single storytelling images. As an example, have a look at the White House flikr feed to see once again just how powerful the single image remains in this all-video world. Hot Sun Ice Hockey
Wednesday, 11 January 2012 06:18

Two games here in Florida - one loss and one win - and today we are off to St. Louis to play the Blues tomorrow night for the last game of this road trip. Here are a few from our time here. And as a small side note, it's easy to say that the Tampa Bay folks have it down. Great rink, fantastic people and the best 'presentation' of hockey as entertainment for its fans I've ever seen. For example, in the third period they play a pump up video on the jumbotron filled with classic Hollywood clips of John Belushi, Jack Nicholson and Will Ferrell mixed with local hockey highlights. They don't take themselves or their mission too seriously, allowing fans to just enjoy the game. Something a lot of teams can and should take note of. At What Cost?
Sunday, 08 January 2012 18:06

Game One of this four game road trip began in Boston Saturday afternoon against the Bruins. After practising the day before at Harvard, the Canucks were greeted by nearly 18,000 still angry Boston fans for an afternoon game at the historic Garden. They clearly hate the Canadians, despite winning the Cup last season. The game was emotional for all and began with several fights. Two Bruins were ejected for unsporty behaviour, and the Canucks won a close game backed by stellar goaltending by hometown Bostontonian Corey Schneider. Unfortunately, many have forgotten it's still a game. And although everyone wants to win. At what cost? Glad to be onto Florida. Boston Ain't Your Kind Of Town

Heading out with the Canucks in the morning for an eight-day roadtrip beginning in Boston with the first game between these two since the seventh game of the Stanley Cup here in Vancouver last June. Should be very interesting. Stay tuned.

Forever's Gonna Start Tonight

Back home now after a great New Year's weekend on Pender Island. Here is a quick pic of the Magic Lake Latern Festival that takes place each year on the island and is a community volunteer event produced by local families. There is nothing quite like it in all of western Canada and well worth planning to visit if you're in the area next year.
